ORAL & ORAL-MAXILOFACIAL SURGERY

ORAL SURGERY

Minor Oral Surgery (MOS)

Wisdom teeth are usually impacted (buried) in the jaw bone due to insufficient space for its eruption. A normal extraction cannot be done to remove it; therefore a minor oral surgery (MOS) is needed. The procedure is done under local anesthetic by an oral surgeon specialist. Patient will be given medication pre and post treatment to minimize the discomforting conditions. In most cases, wisdom tooth cause the gum around them to inflame and swollen. Wisdom teeth can also trap food debris between causing decays at the tooth in front of it, hence need to be removed.

Bone Augmentation/Graft

Bone replacement is minor surgical procedure to replace bone loss due to gum disease or extractions. The indented bone loss areas are filled with naturally harvested bone combined/or with synthetic bone powder. This procedure is sometimes required prior to implant to ensure stability of an implant where the bone size or density is not sufficient.

Soft Tissue Replacement

Soft tissue replacement is usually done to repair receding gums or to increase the gum after bone replacement. This will make the gum look natural when a crown tooth has been placed.

Sinus Lift

Sinus lift procedure; also known as sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure which aims to increase the amount of bone in the posterior of upper jaw bone (maxilla), in the area of the premolar and molar teeth. It is done by lifting the lower Schneiderian membrane (sinus membrane) and placing a bone graft.

This procedure is sometimes necessary prior to placement of dental implants. Some patients needing dental implants simply do not have enough bone necessary to support implants due to bone loss.

Surgical Endodontic/Apicoetomy

Surgical endodontic is carried out when normal endodontic treatment (root canal treatment) cannot achieve the desired result. The root canal is plugged at the tip of the root to ensure the sterile condition in the root system. This is done by surgically exposing the tip of the root, then filling it up with filling material.

ORAL-MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of disorders affecting the facial complex and skeleton, including the jaws and oral cavity.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical specialty focusing on diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. In layman terms, it is reconstructive and corrective surgery with the end result clearly visible on the patient's facial structure.

Trained and qualified in both medicine and oral dentistry, Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons can treat conditions requiring expertise in both fields. These include a range of common oral surgical problems (eg. impacted teeth, dental implant), jaw and congenital facial disproportion, facial trauma, oral cancer, salivary gland disease, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) and various benign pathologies such as cysts and tumors.

ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY

Orthognathic surgery corrects any irregularities pertaining to the jaw and realign the teeth and jaw to improve both appearance and function. This treatment requires the combined expertise of an Orthodontist and an Oral Maxillofacial surgeon.

Some examples are where upper or lower jaws that are too big, too small, too forward and set too far back, combined with crooked or unaligned teeth; resulting in overbite, under-bite, an open bite and excess upper gums which cannot be corrected with orthodontics alone. In these cases, wearing braces will be prescribed to prepare the teeth alignment before the jaw surgery and may be prescribed again post-surgery during recovery.

Depending on a patient condition, jaw surgery may be performed on the upper jaw, lower jaw, chin or any combination of these. Jaw surgery may help to:

  • Repair facial injury or birth defects
  • Improve overall function of teeth such as biting and chewing
  • Relieve pain caused by temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and other jaw problems
  • Correct problems with swallowing or speech
  • Correct facial imbalance (asymmetry) and facial aesthetics
